My name is Katka Hubacek, a Czech-Canadian artist based in Ontario. My art practice involves exploring sculpture, mixed media, drawing, as well as oil and acrylic painting.

I hold a diploma from the National Theatre School of Canada as a set and costume designer. Subsequently, I pursued a Costume Studies Diploma at Dalhousie University in Halifax to specialize in drafting and sewing costumes. Over a span of 10 years, I worked in film, TV, theater, and dance, only to realize that being in a creative field wasn't enough. I needed to explore my own stories and find my voice.

My journey began at craft fairs with recycled bags, then progressed to plush toys and later illustration. It was only after having two children that I finally accepted my true passion: to be a painter. I pursued a BFA at Concordia University, partly for the structure of deadlines and accountability.

In my work, I explore themes of vulnerability and emotion through the tug and pull of motherhood and womanhood. I find inspiration in the mystery and contrast of what we choose to show or hide. What does it mean to be a contemporary woman, and what roles do we play within today’s societal preconceived ideas? As an artist, I grapple with history’s traditional notions of woman/wife/mother and how we no longer fit into those narrow boxes. These binding limitations are deeply rooted in my work.

It's an exploration of expression versus narration, abstraction versus figuration, incorporating tenderness and femininity in contrast with violence and darkness.
